How to Choose the Right Dog Harness Size
Share
Choosing the right harness size for your dog is one of the most important decisions you'll make for their comfort and safety on walks. A harness that's too tight will chafe and restrict movement; one that's too loose can allow your dog to slip out — which is dangerous on a busy street.
Step 1: Measure your dog's chest girth
The chest girth is the single most important measurement for harness sizing. Have your dog stand on all four paws, then wrap a soft measuring tape around the widest point of their chest — just behind the front legs. Keep it snug but not tight (you should be able to slip two fingers underneath).
Step 2: Match to our size chart
| Size | Chest Girth | Dog Weight (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| S | 14–18 inches | Up to 20 lbs |
| M | 18–22 inches | 20–40 lbs |
| L | 22–26 inches | 40–70 lbs |
| XL | 26–32 inches | 70+ lbs |
Step 3: When between sizes, size up
If your dog is right on the border between two sizes, go up to the larger size. Most harnesses are adjustable within a size range, so a bit of extra room is easier to manage than a harness that's too snug.
How to check the fit
- You should be able to fit two fingers flat under any strap
- The harness should not dig into your dog's armpits
- Your dog should be able to walk, sit, and lie down without restriction
